Australia has a vibrant, countrywide greyhound industry, with the best welfare standards and regulations in the world.
Big call — and how do I know? Because I’ve studied the industry on a nearly daily basis for 45 years. An obsession, maybe; definitely a constant, lifelong friend I wouldn’t swap.
The industry contributes $2.5 billion to the Australian economy per annum, with $9 billion wagered on hounds each year, 15,000 full-time jobs and who knows how many part-time jobs.

Big business.

Much has changed — too much to talk about here — but I’ve written a blog over the last few years that takes us back to the Egyptians and follows the journey from there. It includes great educational stories, along with five globally influential greyhounds that forged our path. A link is attached to the website for story lovers and greyhound history nerds.

In 2026, all racing codes are under threat from the antis, and we’ve seen overseas that, if you become complacent, you’ll struggle because of infiltration into parliament. Unfortunately, politicians will sell their souls and lie to people’s faces to get their votes, as we’ve recently seen in Tasmania.

Greyhound racing has become a bargaining tool for politicians to weasel deals with the Greens. Yes, they have their views, but unfortunately for us, reality is blurred by lies. Crooked politicians have become our nemesis — “low-hanging fruit”, they call us.

Rogue elements exist in all walks of life, and I’ve seen them in our industry. However, after dealing with more than 200 people in my time as a greyhound carer, I believe they represent less than 2%. We aim for zero.

Good people in our industry are constantly being persecuted. When I’m told the world accepts all types of people, it doesn’t add up. This comes from a place of hate.

To say I was proud of industry trainers in 2016 would be an understatement. One of my blogs, Where Stars Are Born, tells the story of those times. We fought very hard, and we fought from the heart.

The number of youthful, ambitious newcomers — mostly female — flocking to the industry is heartwarming and shows the truth about the direction we are heading.

In May 2027, we will celebrate 100 years since Harold Park opened in Sydney. For 100 years, we have been proud of our greyhounds, and I thought there had never been a better time to walk proud and tall, represent the industry, and show my gratitude for you hardworking, wonderful trainers and our noble breed.

The original sighthound. The only dog mentioned in the Bible.

So why make them extinct?

Walk tall. Long tails.

“Our greatest asset is our spirit — friendships within the industry and people who love and enjoy their greyhounds.”

The Queen of Oz

When I started this greyhound blog about 15 months ago i mentioned there would be 5 greyhounds that had global influence and would shape the future with their pizazz and the adoration of the public , and i would dedicate a piece to them , well today its dog 5 the only Australian a female who was synonymous with the code and if you surveyed anybody over 50 the name Zoom Top would quickly leave the lips , so for the younger fans lets recap a little on the dog they called “sweetie”.
